Jurassic Lake Karatau, Kazakhstan

The Aulie exposure in the Karatau mountains of Kazakhstan, with its Jurassic flora and fauna, is one of those rare paleontological sites where almost the entire assemblage of animals living near the shore and in the waters of the ancient lake has been preserved. The uniqueness of the site is also due to the fact that the fossils found there have often preserved traces of parts that are fixed only under extraordinary conditions of fossilization.

The site is counted among the world's fossil treasures (Konservat Fossil Lagerstätten), places where fossil organisms are preserved with exceptional anatomical detail. In 2006, we conducted excavations there and the materials obtained in the process are now being scientifically processed by us and our colleagues. We have thus joined the already long line of researchers In 2011, an exhibition presenting the first results of the research expedition to Kazakhstan was opened at the Museum of Evolution.

You can read more about the paleontological finds from Jurassic Lake Karatau in the bulletin Ewolucja [spis treści] (The bulletin is in Polish and can be purchased at the Museum of Evolution).
