Excavations

Grenland

In July 2014, the Institute of Paleobiology of the Polish Academy of Sciences organized a research expedition to East Greenland. The participants of the expedition, consisting of Błażej Błażejewski, Grzegorz Niedźwiedzki, Niels Bonde, Mateusz Tałanda, Andrzej Wolniewicz and Tomasz Sulej as the leader, searched for Late Triassic vertebrate remains in the Jamson Land area above Carlsber Fiord for almost three weeks. Two camps were set up during the expedition, the first at well-known sites with Norse amphibians and reptiles, and the second in an area that is poorly understood.

The systematic exploration work resulted in a rather rich collection of fossilized bones and tracks, which are described in detail in Polish Polar Research (Sulej et al. 2014).

The finding of Late Triassic mammalian remains, on which further research is being conducted, should be considered the biggest success. The expedition was funded by a grant NCN "Początki ssaków w zapisie kopalnym z nowych stanowisk paleontologicznych" (UMO-2012/07/B/NZ8/02707).
