Ancestors of Neogastropoda – old problem, new data

PUBLICATION — Bakayeva S., Nützel A. & Kaim A. An elusive ancestry of Neogastropoda: a potential of Maturifusidae, Pseudotritoniidae, and Purpurinidae as the stem groups. Comptes Rendus Palevol. 2024. Vol. 23. P. 1-29. https://doi.org/10.5852/cr-palevol2024v23a31

Neogastropods are a diverse group of carnivorous sea snails found worldwide but with the largest diversity in tropical regions. It is thought that their hunting strategy helped the group to diversify quickly during the Mesozoic. This paper revises three families that other researchers have said were the ancestors of neogastropods. One new species is described, and a new proposition of the relationships between the extinct Purpurinidae and modern neogastropods and tonnoids is presented.
