Excavations

Lisowice, Poland

Excavations in the pit of the Lipie Śląskie brickyard in Lisowice have opened another window into a world from just over two hundred million years ago, from the end of the Triassic period. The picture turned out to be a surprise for paleontologists. In Lipie Slaskie, larger-than-ever known herbivorous mammalian reptiles - dicynodonts twenty million years after their supposed descent from the scene co-occur with the world's oldest known large dinosaurs! What's more, accompanied by numerous other amphibians and reptiles.

The results of the excavations are still being studied by paleontologists from the Institute of Paleobiology of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Faculty of Biology of Warsaw University. The first “warm” still results of this research and exhibits of the most impressive already dissected bones, tracks and other animal and plant remains from the end of the Triassic can be seen in Lisowice. The local community, with the support of the Pawonkow municipality, has organized a Paleontological Museum, which is an excellent complement to the exhibits and excavations at the nearby Krasiejow.

You can read more about the paleontological finds from Lisowice in the bulletin Ewolucja.
